Methodology

How we research, verify, and keep every state guide current.

1. We research the official source first

Every figure on a LicenScout state guide — application fee, bond amount, exam format, renewal cycle — is researched directly against the state licensing board, Secretary of State, or department that actually issues the credential. We do not copy figures from other guide sites, forums, or exam-prep marketing pages, and we do not estimate numbers we can’t verify.

2. We cite the source on every page

Each state guide includes a source note linking directly to the official regulator, so you can check the current figure yourself rather than taking our word for it. If a fee or requirement has an unusual wrinkle — like a mid-cycle law change — we call that out explicitly rather than smoothing it over.

3. We say when a state is different, not just “n/a”

Some licenses simply don’t exist the way you’d expect in every state — our Texas contractor guide is a direct example: rather than force Texas into the same template as California and Florida, we explain plainly that Texas has no statewide general contractor license and what actually applies instead. Where a requirement genuinely doesn’t apply, we say so and explain why.

4. Requirements change — we re-verify

Licensing fees, bond minimums, and education requirements are set by state agencies and legislatures, and they do change — sometimes mid-year, as with Texas’s new 2026 notary education rule or Florida’s 2025 contractor licensing overhaul. We periodically re-check published guides against the current official source and update them when something changes, rather than treating a guide as a one-time snapshot.

5. What we don’t do

We don’t publish per-city or per-county contact directories where the underlying data isn’t reliably maintainable, and we don’t fabricate specific figures when an official source is genuinely unclear or unavailable — in that case, we say so directly rather than guessing.
